Times Square is undeniably a top world destination for tourists, but a visit there doesn’t mean you have to eat like one.
Don’t let yourself get trapped in a T.G.I. Friday’s – NYTG Restaurant Guide: Times Square offers great alternatives to the popular out-of-towner haunts in this area.
NYTG Restaurant Guide: Times Square
Ellen’s Stardust Diner: The Theatre District is full of actors trying to get their start on the stage, and many of them work at this iconic New York restaurant. The food is standard diner fare, like the Be Bop a Lula Burger, Ruby Reuben, and Fried Mozzarella Triangles. The real draw of Stardust Diner is that nearly every member of the waitstaff is a trained performer using their day jobs to practice musical medleys. Servers routinely break into song and dance numbers, serenading guests with show tunes while they eat. It’s like being at a Broadway dinner theater! Locals may say Stardust is so cliché, but watching your server belt out “Grease Lightening” while you sip on an Egg Cream is so worth it.
Ellen’s Stardust Diner is located at 1650 Broadway, New York, NY 10019
Trattoria Trecolori: The Olive Garden in Times Square may be impressive, but if you want real Italian food in the NYC Theater District you need to expand your horizons. Trattoria Trecolori has delicious dishes, an elegant atmosphere, and reasonable price tags. Order classic pasta recipes like Spaghetti alla Bolognese, Farfalle Primavera, Fettucine Alfredo, and Gnocchi alla Baba. For entrees, get the Chicken Parmigiana and Veal Piccata. More daring diners can try the Calamari alla Luciana, served in squid ink with saffron risotto. For dessert, get homemade Tartufo, Tiramisu, or Ricotta Cheesecake. After a meal here, you’ll cringe every time you hear the words “unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks.”
Trattoria Trecolori is located at 254 W 47th St, New York, NY 10036
Lamb’s Club: This upscale Geoffrey Zakarian NYC restaurant has the celebrity chef stamp, but it’s low-key enough that it’s stayed off the tourist route. Stop in for dinner or snacks if you want to splurge – split the Venison Pâté en Croûte as an appetizer or gorge yourself on Roasted Diver Scallops & Veal Sweetbreads. Lamb Club’s cocktail selection is pricey, but they take their recipes seriously. Each drink features top-shelf liquors mixed with ingredients like elderflower, fruit puree, egg whites, or black salt. The menu includes “Dubai or not Dubai, That is the Answer”, a $75 cocktail made with no less than 5 imported liquors and gold leaf. You only live once, right?
Lamb’s Club is located at 132 W 44th St, New York, NY 10036
Tolache: This lunchtime-favorite Mexican restaurant in Midtown NYC has one thing on the menu that you won’t find at most restaurants, Chapulines – aka grasshopper tacos. There are also Suadero (brisket), Pescado (fish), Pollo (chicken) and Carne Asada (beef) tacos available for the less adventurous. Other dishes like Ceviche, Quesadillas, and Tortas make for great choices. Or, you could skip the meal and get all three Guacamole flavors they offer: traditional, spicy, and frutas (with pomegranate, apple, mango, habanero, and Thai basil). For drinks, try one of Tolache’s two kinds of Sangria (your server will tell you to go with the Red over the White).
Tolache is located at 251 W 50th St, New York, NY 10019
The Little Beet: Looking for something quick, healthy, and gluten-free? You may think that’s impossible to find in Times Square, but go no further than The Little Beet. This vegan-friendly restaurant offers salads like the Caesar Cardini (traditional recipe with butternut squash chickpeas, avocado), grain bowls with Miso Chicken, and seasonal offerings like Cauliflower Leak Soup. You can also opt to create your own plate, which includes a protein and two sides. Grab one of their cold-pressed juices to-go; they’re made with apple, mint, and mango that mask the earthy flavors from ingredients like beets, kale, and spinach. Pair it with a gluten-free doughnut or brownie; you’ve just eaten clean, so you deserve it.
The Little Beet is located at 135 W 50th St, New York, NY 10020
